Huth sorry now as Arsenal beat Leicester to keep top-four hopes alive

Arsenal kept their hopes of a top-four finish alive as a late Robert Huth own goal was enough for them to see off reigning champions Leicester.
After the toxic atmosphere of recent weeks diminished somewhat after a semi-final victory over Manchester City at Wembley on Sunday, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger looked like being brought back down to earth by the Foxes, only for Nacho Monreal’s late effort to fly in off the unwitting Huth to seal a scrappy 1-0 win.
Until that point, the hosts had been kept at bay by a well-drilled Leicester defence and some smart saves from Kasper Schmeichel.
But the deadlock was broken with four minutes remaining to take Wenger’s side up to fifth and just two points adrift of Liverpool.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger: “Does it keep us in the race for the top four? Yes, we have one advantage and that is the advantage of clarity. We have to win our games and so that’s why every time we cannot be happy with 0-0. We have absolutely to take the gamble to try to win the game at any cost. In the end the win rewards the team that took the initiative in the game.”
Foxes manager Craig Shakespeare: “The goal was a cruel deflection because it wasn’t even on target. It happened so quickly he couldn’t even get out of the way. We have to recover quickly.”

It needed a bit of luck but Monreal’s late strike won the game for Arsenal, even if the heavy deflection means it goes down as a Robert Huth own-goal. Monreal provided a crucial equaliser too in Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final victory over Manchester City and he proved the value here of shooting, when his team-mates had so often previously opted for one more pass.

Leicester’s Yohan Benalouane was lucky to escape with only a yellow card after he thrust his boot into Olivier Giroud’s back as the Frenchman challenged for a header. Benalouane appeared also to have his eyes on Giroud rather than the ball but referee Mike Jones thought it only worth a caution. The fact Jones saw it should also spare Benalouane any retrospective action.

Stat attack

Arsenal have scored 29 goals in the last 30 minutes of Premier League games this season, more than any other side.
