5 things we learned from the Premier League this weekend

Tottenham’s defeat by West Ham on Friday has opened the door for Chelsea to move to within touching distance of the Premier League title with victory over Middlesbrough on Monday.
There was another twist at the bottom of the table, with Hull dropping into the bottom three below Swansea.
Here, we pick out five things we learned this weekend.

1. If at first you don’t succeed

Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho had met 16 times previously as managers before Arsenal hosted Manchester United on Sunday. Wenger had come out on top just once – in the 2015 Community Shield. If this is to be Wenger’s final season in charge of the Gunners then at least the Frenchman will have a meaningful victory over Mourinho to remember after Arsenal won 2-0. The result also kept Arsenal in the race for a top-four spot.

2. Advantage City

The result at the Emirates also made it a perfect weekend for Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s side enjoyed one of their biggest wins of the season by beating Crystal Palace 5-0 on Saturday, a result that briefly lifted them into third spot in the table. Liverpool could only draw with Southampton so now lead City by a point having played a game more, while United are four points adrift and look likely to have to rely on winning the Europa League if they are to qualify for the Champions League.

3. Deja vu for Spurs

After seeing their long pursuit of Leicester last season end in failure, the same thing looks set to happen to Tottenham this season. It was always a tough ask to overhaul Chelsea given the relentless pace they have set, and Spurs could scarcely have done any more. But, when their nine-match winning run in the Premier League came to an end on Friday, with it effectively went their title hopes. Mauricio Pochettino’s young team should get another chance but to come so close twice and miss out will undoubtedly hurt.

4. Sunderland play their part

In a quirk of the fixtures, Sunderland are set to play a big part in determining who goes down with them to the Championship. Middlesbrough are almost certain to join their neighbours but whether it is Swansea or Hull who join them could go down to the wire. Losing to the Black Cats was something of a hammer blow to Hull, but it will look a lot less costly if Sunderland also beat Swansea next weekend. After taking seven points from three matches, Paul Clement’s side will hope to carry on their good run, while Palace also remain in danger.

5. Bravo Burnley

It is to the Clarets’ credit that they have been out of relegation conversation for some time. They could still mathematically be dragged into the bottom three but, by drawing with West Brom to reach the magic 40-point mark, Sean Dyche’s side all but ensured they will spend two consecutive seasons in the Premier League for the first time. Dyche’s team have made a habit of overachieving but that does nothing to diminish their accomplishments.
