Alexis Sanchez helped 10-man Arsenal to a 3-1 win over Everton but Arsene Wenger’s side missed out on Champions League qualification after victories for Liverpool and Manchester City.
Arsenal needed to win on the final day and hope their rivals slipped up, with goals from Hector Bellerin, Sanchez and Aaron Ramsey ensuring they held up their side of the bargain despite Laurent Koscielny’s early red card. Romelu Lukaku had made it 2-1 by scoring from the penalty spot.
But Liverpool beat Middlesbrough and City trounced Watford, meaning Arsene Wenger’s men finish fifth and, for the first time since 1996, will have to settle for Europa League football next term.
That’s the end of our @premierleague season. Three points today but it’s not enough to secure a top-four finish.#AFCvEFC pic.twitter.com/oGKoQnwKG9— Arsenal FC (@Arsenal) May 21, 2017

Quite possibly the assist of the season from Welbeck.— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) May 21, 2017
Star man – Hector Bellerin

The Spanish right-back played arguably his best game of the season. The 22-year-old caused havoc on the right flank and deservedly got himself on the scoresheet.
In with the crowd

Arsenal fans were always going to be in headlines regardless of Sunday’s result. With their top-four hopes all but ended as Liverpool took a 3-0 lead against Middlesbrough at Anfield, home supporters voiced their frustration at shareholder Stan Kroenke on numerous occasions with the chant “Stan Kroenke, get out of our club” ringing around the Emirates.
Moments of the match

Lapses of concentration from Laurent Koscielny and Gabriel as well as an injury scare to Alexis Sanchez will certainly give Arsene Wenger a selection headache ahead of the next week’s FA Cup final against Premier League champions Chelsea. Koscielny’s reckless challenge on Enner Valencia inside 15 minutes saw the Arsenal captain shown a red card, meaning he will miss the cup final through suspension. A poor challenge from Gabriel on Valencia saw the Brazilian carried off while Sanchez limped off holding his right hamstring.
