Arsene Wenger finally gets Premier League win over Jose Mourinho

Arsene Wenger finally recorded a Premier League victory against Jose Mourinho as Arsenal kept their slim top-four hopes alive with a well-deserved win over Manchester United.
The under-fire Frenchman had failed to beat Mourinho in the pair’s previous 12 league meetings but he got his first three points against the former Chelsea boss just when he needed it.
Granit Xhaka’s deflected strike gave the hosts a lead at the start of the second half before ex-United striker Danny Welbeck scored his third in as many games against his former employers to secure a 2-0 win.
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho: “I tried to win. I didn’t give them the match, I tried to win but we lost. Arsene Wenger is not a small manager, he is a big manager so to have that record of winning so many matches and losing so many matches is something that is not normal. That is not normal. Normal is win, lose, draw. It’s not normal and I really don’t care about it. Today no problem – we shook hands before the game, we shook hands after the game. And during the game I didn’t like what I never like, he puts too much pressure on the fourth official all the time.”
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger (on his fractious relationship with Mourinho): “It’s between the two teams. At the end of the day, that’s what I make of it. It was important (to beat United) because we lost at Tottenham – that didn’t happen many times. Overall, you play Man United and it’s another big game. We could not afford to lose today.”

Star man – Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Oxlade-Chamberlain has played in a number of different roles for Arsenal but he may have found his best at right wing-back. He was a menace down the right flank and it was his excellent cross that led to the second goal. A word also for Danny Welbeck whose tireless running in the final third was rewarded with an excellent, powering header.

Jose Mourinho had to wait for Arsene Wenger to emerge from the tunnel before kick-off and greeted the Frenchman with a fairly terse handshake. Pleasantries quickly evaporated with the game under way, however, as Mourinho and Wenger briefly clashed over a late Wayne Rooney challenge. Mourinho made eight changes to his side, presumably with Thursday’s Europa League semi-final second leg against Celta Vigo in mind, and United lacked energy from the start. Wenger will be delighted his players bounced back from last weekend’s bruising defeat at Tottenham and managed to keep their Champions League qualification hopes alive.

Stat attack

Arsene Wenger has now beaten Jose Mourinho in the Premier League for the first time after 13 attempts.
