Celtic leave it late as Rogic’s dramatic strike clinches treble

Substitute Tom Rogic’s sensational stoppage-time winner gave Celtic a 2-1 William Hill Scottish Cup final success over Aberdeen and clinched an historic treble for the Hoops.
In an open and thrilling encounter at Hampden Park, winger Jonny Hayes volleyed the Dons into the lead in the ninth minute only for Parkhead midfielder Stuart Armstrong to level two minutes later.
Celtic grew stronger as the second half went on and Rogic – a first-half replacement after Kieran Tierney had teeth smashed by Jayden Stockley’s arm – glided into the box before finishing inside the near post as Brendan Rodgers’ side completed the whole domestic season unbeaten with the club’s first treble since 2001.
Celtic’s Brendan Rodgers: “Maybe the stars were aligned this year with it being the anniversary year for Celtic and there was just a feeling about this season. It was a very tough game and to win it the way we did was special. They were playing a man-marking game so you have to be patient and move the ball side to side and eventually it becomes really difficult to defend, when you are the defending team and that’s what happened.”
Dons manager Derek McInnes: “It felt like two proper teams slugging it out. There were chances, both keepers made great saves and good saves and when it’s slugging it out there is sometimes that lucky punch or that killer punch and today I think Rogic produced a bit of class, a brilliant finish, though we are disappointed of course, compounded because it was a cup final.”

Moment of the match

Rogic has added some real magic to Celtic’s season including a late winner at Motherwell and a brilliant winner at Aberdeen, but he excelled himself in the final moments of a memorable campaign for his team when he glided into the box and slotted home a stoppage-time winner.

Stockley was back from suspension (Craig Watson/PA)
Stockley returned from suspension after being sent off against Rangers for twice being booked for reckless use of the arm when jumping. He was equally reckless when standing on the ground at Hampden as his raised arm battered Tierney’s mouth as he turned round with real force at a throw-in. Referee Bobby Madden saw nothing amiss but the Scottish Football Association compliance officer may have a closer look.

Hampden classic

Scotland’s top two teams produced a fitting finale to the season. Aberdeen gave Celtic probably their toughest test in 47 domestic matches but still Celtic remained undefeated. The Dons edged the first half and both sides threw everything at each other after the break with the champions only getting dominant in the closing 20 minutes.
