City hammer Palace to boost top-four hopes

Manchester City tightened their grip on a top-four spot with a convincing 5-0 win over Crystal Palace in the Premier League.
The outstanding David Silva, who passed a fitness test to feature, set City on their way to three crucial points in the Champions League qualification race by scoring after just two minutes.
Captain Vincent Kompany doubled dominant City’s lead at the Etihad Stadium before Kevin De Bruyne, who also hit the woodwork, and Raheem Sterling got on the scoresheet and Nicolas Otamendi headed a late fifth.
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola: “We are the best team in the Premier League to create clear, clear chances. Nobody can beat us. But we are not able to score goals. In basketball you see Michael Jordan, last minute … puts it in the net. The most difficult thing in football, basketball, tennis, in all the sports is to do it in the last moment. That’s why we are in the situation we are in.”
Crystal Palace boss Sam Allardyce: “Defensively we made too many mistakes and they punished us heavily. It was a bit of a capitulation. All five goals could have been avoided if we had defended properly. That is the biggest disappointment. It is very difficult to take what I saw. Lose, yes, but lose like that? No, unacceptable.”

Star man

De Bruyne. The first half was dominated by the graceful promptings of Silva but the longer the game went on, the more De Bruyne announced himself as the decisive force in City’s rout. He was involved in everything – scoring, setting up two and hitting the crossbar with a curling free-kick. Relentless and measured, this was a wonderful 90 minutes.

Helping hand

De Bruyne’s cutback for Kompany and his cushioned header for Sterling took the Belgian to 16 Premier League assists for the season – the highest in any of Europe’s top five leagues, overtaking Emil Forsberg of RB Leipzig. The last time a City player topped the division’s assist rankings was back in 2011-12, when Silva managed 15.

Moment of the match

Kompany hammers home a delicious top-corner strike to double the lead, and effectively end Palace’s hopes of getting something from the game. It was a finish any top marksman would be proud to have in their scrapbook and delighted the skipper’s team-mates, if the wild, head-slapping celebrations were anything to go by.
