Southampton suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Stoke in what may prove Claude Puel’s final game as manager.
Their club’s hierarchy had revealed plans to review his position at the season’s end, offering him minimal support, and after their latest defeat and inability to score for a fifth straight game at home, may act despite finishing eighth in the Premier League.
Increasing hostility from the club’s supporters will also add further pressure on the Frenchman’s position, whose team lost after a second-half header from Peter Crouch that took Stoke to 13th.

Stoke manager Mark Hughes: “We finished 13th. That is the first time I have been outside the top 10 when I have been in charge for a Premier League club for a full season. We finished 13th but we are two points behind Southampton who are in eighth. That is the margins.”
Southampton boss Claude Puel: “I want to stay with all the positives and to finish eighth, I’m proud. It’s a difficult season for the staff but it’s a difficult season for the squad. We lost important players for the team and every time we found a solution. All my players improved and learned this season and this is important.”

Hope Puel is not booed today. A decent man, worked hard for club&delivered poss 8th and EFL final. Doesn't deserve nasty treatment #saintsfc— Adam Leitch (@adamleitchsport) May 21, 2017
Star man – Jack Butland
82- SAVE! Butland makes another save, this time tipping a shor from inside the box over with his leg #Saints 0-1 #SCFC— Stoke City FC (@stokecity) May 21, 2017
The Stoke goalkeeper was making only his fifth appearance of an injury-ravaged season, but recovered from a first-half mistake that almost led to a Southampton goal to repeatedly deny the hosts with a variety of saves that earned a clean sheet.
In with the crowd
Southampton's lap of honour observed by a half-empty crowd, albeit with some enthusiasm, but in absence of the under-pressure Claude Puel— Declan Warrington (@decwarrington) May 21, 2017
In addition to Southampton’s supporters booing the under-pressure Puel’s substitutions midway through the second half, they chanted at the manager “You don’t know what you’re doing” and “Attack, attack, attack”. Stoke’s section joined in with “You’re getting sacked in the morning”.
Highlight of the match
45: Jack Butland takes too long on the ball, @NathanRedmond22 tries a cheeky lob but it hits the bar and goes out. #saintsfc [0-0] pic.twitter.com/vALAR1zZQN— Southampton FC (@SouthamptonFC) May 21, 2017
With his back to goal from around 40 yards, and under pressure with minimal time, Nathan Redmond classily turned and chipped the out-of-position Butland, and was unfortunate as his impressive effort bounced off the crossbar and out of play. The quality involved was something of which Xabi Alonso, Andrea Pirlo or David Beckham would have been proud.
