Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick as Real Madrid swept aside city rivals Atletico 3-0 at the Bernabeu in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final.
Ronaldo had taken his tally of European goals to 100 in the quarter-final win over Bayern Munich, which included a second-leg treble, and was once more the man for the big occasion to put the holders within touching distance of the final again.
The Portugal forward headed Real in front on 10 minutes, although he appeared to have been offside in the initial build-up. There was, though, no controversy about Ronaldo’s second goal with 17 minutes left as he lashed the ball in from the edge of the Atletico penalty area.

Ronaldo completed his hat-trick for the second successive Champions League fixture when he swept in Lucas Vazquez’s cut-back on 86 minutes.
Atletico, beaten in last season’s final by Real, rarely threatened and now have it all to do at the Vicente Calderon next Wednesday night.
Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane: “Cristiano is a goalscorer. He is unique. All the players were brilliant. I am lucky to have these players. We try too play our football and enjoy ourselves. It works because we have great players with great attitudes.”Tweet of the match
Another @ChampionsLeague hat trick for Ronaldo. He's ridiculous.— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) May 2, 2017

Not content with stealing the headlines in the quarter-final win over Bayern Munich, Cristiano Ronaldo hit a second successive Champions League hat-trick to sink Atletico. Love him or loathe him, the Portugal forward continues to confound his critics and produce the goods. Ronaldo’s treble took his tally to 103 Champions League goals, which is more than Atletico have chalked up all together, and now has no less than 21 goals in Madrid derbies. Not bad for a lad from Madeira.
Atletico’s Real bad run goes on
Simeone: "Football is a marvellous game and anything can happen. I still think we have a chance of going through." #UCL pic.twitter.com/sLAX8Xd3bt— Champions League (@ChampionsLeague) May 2, 2017
The two city rivals were meeting in Europe’s elite competition for a fourth successive year, with Real having also won both last season’s final and the 2014 showdown in Lisbon. While they continue to lock horns in LaLiga, with a goal from Antoine Griezmann giving Diego Simeone’s side a 1-1 draw last month, their European divide appears ever widening. Atletico have it all to do back at Vicente Calderon next week, and can draw strength from some 17 wins out of 21 Champions League home games.

Despite having led Real to Champions League glory, coach Zinedine Zidane is still all too aware his position is anything but untouchable. Aiming to become the first team to successfully defend the European Cup in its modern format, on these past two displays, it would take something special to stop Ronaldo and Real from going all the way to lift the trophy again in Cardiff. However, Zidane also knows the Bernabeu powers-that-be will also have their sights set on holding off Barcelona to land the LaLiga title.
