Famous Premier League overhead kicks

Liverpool’s Emre Can illuminated Vicarage Road on Monday night with a fabulous overhead kick to give his side victory against Watford.
The German produced a late entry for the division’s goal-of-the-season contest with a powerful effort he flicked home from just inside the Hornets’ penalty area.
Here, Press Association Sport looks at some other brilliant bicycle kicks in Premier League history.

Benito Carbone v Newcastle, 1997

Sheffield Wednesday’s Italian forward managed to make something out of nothing at St James’ Park with one of the more under-appreciated goals in Premier League history. Collecting an under-hit long ball forward, Carbone controlled the pass on his chest, teed it up with his right foot and then dispatched a brilliant finish with the same boot into the corner of the Newcastle net while the home side’s defenders stood around in befuddlement.

Dimitar Berbatov v Liverpool, 2010

Like Carbone’s effort, Berbatov’s strike was self-made, though he used just two touches rather than three. Nani’s delivery from the right may have been aimed at Wayne Rooney but it proved too high for him and came through to his Bulgarian team-mate, who cushioned the ball into the air with his right thigh and then fell backwards as he whipped an effort from the edge of the box back over his head and in off the crossbar past a rooted Pepe Reina, who was beaten three times by Berbatov that day in United’s 3-2 success.

Wayne Rooney v Manchester City, 2011

The most memorable of Rooney’s 252 Manchester United goals decided the derby at Old Trafford in 2011. With the game all square at 1-1, Rooney settled the contest with a brilliant piece of improvisation in the 78th minute as he watched Nani’s deflected cross loop up and thumped it beyond Joe Hart before Micah Richards could head clear. Replays showed it was hardly a flush contact with his right boot but it still flew into the corner of the net past a disbelieving Hart.

Christian Benteke v Manchester United, 2015

Two minutes before Anthony Martial announced his arrival in England with a fine goal against United’s rivals Liverpool, Christian Benteke was endearing himself to his new club with a thumping strike of his own. Daley Blind’s header from a right-wing cross sent the ball soaring into the air around 12 yards out where a watchful Benteke was waiting to size up a bicycle kick that had his marker Ander Herrera trying to protect his head from an effort that beat David De Gea.

Andy Carroll v Crystal Palace, 2017

Prior to Can’s stunner at Watford, there could be few arguments that Carroll owned the best goal of this variety this season. Sightings of the towering centre-forward have been all too infrequent for Hammers fans this term but he was present at the back post when Michail Antonio’s cross was sent his direction. What was most impressive about Carroll’s finish was the sheer power he produced to leave Palace stopper Wayne Hennessey grasping at air.
