Huddersfield win penalty shoot-out against Reading to seal Premier League spot

Huddersfield are back in the top flight after 45 years, clinching Premier League football and a £170million windfall by beating Reading on penalties in the Championship play-off final after the score had finished 0-0 at the end of extra time.
The Terriers faced an uphill battle after fans’ favourite Michael Hefele missed his spot-kick, only for Liam Moore to blaze over and Danny Ward – the shootout hero in the semi-final at Sheffield Wednesday – to save Jordan Obita’s penalty.
Christopher Schindler stepped up to send Huddersfield into the top flight for the first time since 1972, leading to wild celebrations on the field and in the stands.
Huddersfield manager David Wagner said: “I told the players before the play-offs that they were heroes. But from hero to zero in football is sometimes only a week, and they had the opportunity to become legends. And they have done it. They are Huddersfield legends. We have had so many setbacks, so many problems, we don’t have the biggest squad, but we trusted and believed in ourselves.”
Reading manager Jaap Stam said: “I have a contract and I’m very happy here. It’s always hard if you lose but what we achieved this season is great – how we made progress, got in the top six and to the play-off final. Of course if you reach the final you give it your best shot, it doesn’t matter how you play, the result is the most important thing.”

The Town midfielder looked like one of the few players on show who could be Premier League material. A class act in the centre and would not have deserved to have been on the losing side.

Huddersfield’s Chelsea loanee Izzy Brown somehow missed an open goal from two yards out. The youngster only had to tap in a cross from Elias Kachunga to give Town a first-half lead, but the ball hit his shin and flew wide.
