Hull have been relegated from the Premier League after a 4-0 defeat at Crystal Palace.
They struggled to recover after gifting Wilfried Zaha a third-minute goal, and will return to the Sky Bet Championship next season having been left four points from safety with only one fixture to play.
The hosts had needed only a draw to preserve their Premier League status, but secured all three after Christian Benteke’s 17th goal of the season was followed by Luka Milivojevic’s penalty and a Patrick Van Aanholt strike.

I can't remember a more lack lustre, inept, 'lack of fight' for survival by any team in recent history. Get the ball in the box Hull.— Richard Keys (@richardajkeys) May 14, 2017
Star man – Jason Puncheon

The Palace captain dictated much of his team’s tempo and discipline, which during a fixture that had the potential to overwhelm them proved key. His leadership since taking the captain’s armband has been vital to their improvement under Sam Allardyce, and he also provided the delivery from which Benteke added their second goal.

It seemed insignificant in the wider context of a match that featured four goals and relegated one of the two teams involved, but Sam Clucas’ seventh-minute shot from midfield captured their afternoon – and season – in more ways than one. Despite being well struck and forcing Wayne Hennessey to save, Clucas slipped while shooting, and at 1-0 down cut such a frustrated figure at having lost his footing it already looked as though he and his team-mates felt a positive result beyond them.

Allardyce on @CPFC's #PL survival: "It’s great for everybody behind the scenes and the fans. What a way to end the season at home!" #CRYHULpic.twitter.com/5ozD2rZFvD— Premier League (@premierleague) May 14, 2017
As recently as early February, Palace looked at significant threat of relegation, so it is to Allardyce’s credit that – as he has done on so many other occasions – he has led a struggling team to survival. Victory even keeps Palace in contention for a mid-table finish. Despite Hull’s relegation, few reputations have grown during the second half of this season as manager Marco Silva’s. He had overachieved in avoiding relegation until their penultimate fixture, and they should make it their priority to extend his contract beyond this summer. Several other Premier League teams could also thrive under his management.
