Philippe Coutinho stars as Liverpool boost top-four bid by hammering West Ham

Philippe Coutinho kept Liverpool’s Champions League challenge in their own hands by destroying West Ham at the London Stadium.
The Brazilian master provided a moment of magic to set up Daniel Sturridge for the first-half opener, and then scored two sensational solo goals after the break.
Divock Origi put the seal on a 4-0 victory as the Reds emphatically ensured a win over relegated Middlesbrough on the final day will take them back to Europe’s elite next season.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp: “It was hard work, and there were a few moments where the game could have changed, but we played really good and we were deserved winners. The boys did brilliantly, we scored the goals and could have scored more. So yes, a perfect afternoon. They had chances to score but they couldn’t score. They had one of the biggest chances I ever saw in my life and didn’t score it.”
West Ham manager Slaven Bilic: “I am very disappointed the way we played. We wanted to put in the same performance as against Spurs but it wasn’t to be. We have to be honest about it. We wanted to avoid that factor of complacency but obviously it was there, at least subconsciously. We were nowhere near close enough to them when they had the ball and when you give players like that space they will kill you.”

Star man – Philippe Coutinho

West Ham simply had no answer to the Brazilian who came up with an assist and two stunning goals, and also had the hosts chasing shadows throughout the match.

Moment of the match

Coutinho’s exquisite through-ball from well inside his own half changed the course of the match. Sturridge was previously looking short of confidence but was able to round Adrian and grab his first goal since January 2.

Ayew sure?

West Ham’s £20million forward Andre Ayew produced not one but two miss-of-the-season contenders in one go when he hit the post from two yards out, and then prodded the rebound onto the same upright. The groan could be heard all the way from north London.
