Sanchez and Giroud on target as Arsenal win at Southampton to boost top-four bid


Alexis Sanchez hit his 20th Premier League goal of the season as Arsenal saw off Southampton 2-0 to leapfrog Manchester United into fifth.
Sanchez struck the opener on the hour mark at St Mary’s before Olivier Giroud came off the bench to make sure of the points with a close-range header.
Under-fire Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has constantly reiterated his side cannot put a foot wrong in their remaining games, and they were solid enough to take home victory from the south coast to keep them in the hunt for Champions League qualification.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger: “The goal he (Sanchez) scored tonight shows what he’s about: very good technique in a short space. He scores important goals. He has invention in his head. He’s creative, not phased by anything, and he surprised everyone in the stadium tonight with his goal. Everyone as expecting him to take a shot, but he’s very quick on the move. Giroud came on and the second goal was very important for us, too.”
Southampton boss Claude Puel: “We cannot find the good clinical edge. Every time it was interesting, I think, the play. Just not enough. All the games the same thing… we saw our games since the beginning of the season, many games where we’ve had the same feeling. Opportunities, chances, good play, but no clinical edge.”

His Arsenal future may still be up in the air but Sanchez was the go-to man when his side needed someone to win them the game and the coolness he showed to tuck away one of his only chances of the night showed just how important he is.

Petr Cech remains Arsenal’s number one and he showed why in the first-half, defying his age to tip a Nathan Redmond drive behind for a corner.
