Sergio Romero saves penalty as Man United draw at Southampton

Southampton struggled to relieve the pressure building on manager Claude Puel after an under-strength Manchester United held them to a 0-0 home draw.
Puel’s future is to be discussed at the end of the Premier League season but with Jose Mourinho again selecting a weakened XI – without Marcus Rashford, Michael Carrick, Paul Pogba, Ander Herrera and David De Gea – the home team had the chance to impress.
United goalkeeper Sergio Romero, making only his second league start of the season, instead frustrated them, saving Manolo Gabbiadini’s first-half penalty to help stop United’s losing run in the Premier League.
Man United boss Jose Mourinho: “In any country in the world the (last) match (of the season) would be Saturday, because Sunday we are sixth, doesn’t matter what, and Crystal Palace are safe. I’m here (in English football) already seven years. I never saw any detail of trying to care about the English teams involved in European competitions. It’s just a lost battle. We have to accept the way it is. I hope you don’t kill me when you see my team (on Sunday).”
Southampton boss Claude Puel: “Any teams have a debrief at the end of the season and this is normal but the end of the season is after the last game. It is important to keep the good focus about the pitch and we have the possibility to finish (eighth in) the table.”

Manchester United’s second-choice goalkeeper is expected to start next week’s Europa League final against Ajax, and was more responsible than any other for the fact this remained goalless. He produced a variety of fine saves, including a penalty, demonstrating they have impressive cover for David De Gea.

Southampton had just outplayed United who, though not at full strength, still had a more-than impressive starting XI. The Saints did so in some style, playing some classy football, and are eighth in the Premier League, while their finest player – Virgil van Dijk – is sidelined with a long-term injury and in Puel’s first season managing in English football. Quite why the Frenchman is under pressure and sections of the home crowd chose to boo their team off is difficult to understand.

Among those present at St Mary’s, in one of the boxes, was the Kenya rugby sevens squad. Wayne Rooney’s reputation may be in decline in England, but he appears to remain by some distance their favourite player at least, given the way they cheered his every touch.
